Between Congo basin and atlantic coastline of Pointe Noire harbour, the Mayombe range, in spite of modest altitude, is a hard obstacle to cross over. Alternation of quartzites chains and clayey valleys all drowned inside evergreen forest, the Mayombe range is crossed by a railway, the C.F.C.O., built from 1921 to 1934 with great human and technical difficulties. Nowadays a new railway improves a part of the trip, but the bioclimatic environment remains hostile. A part of the forest has been the subject of a scientific survey by UNESCO in order to built a biosphere natural reserve.

Entre la cuvette congolaise et le littoral atlantique de Pointe-Noire la chaîne du Mayombe, malgré son altitude modeste, fait figure d'obstacle très difficile à franchir. Alternance de chaînons de quartzites et de vallées argileuses, le tout noyé dans la forêt sempervirente, le Mayombe est traversé par une voie ferrée, le C.F.C.O., dont la construction de 1921 à 1934 a été humainement meurtrière et techniquement difficile. De nos jours une voie plus moderne améliore une partie du trajet, mais le milieu bioclimatique demeure hostile. Une partie du massif forestier a fait l'objet d'un inventaire scientifique par l'UNESCO afin de créer une réserve de biosphère.
