Nautical events such as Brest 2008 and the Vendée Globe represent powerful tools for societal mobilization, insofar as they provide the geographer with an exceptional source of observations, and enable him to examine the meaning of their relation to the geographical space. Although these approaches may seem a priori opposite : inheritance versus modernity, local versus global, they nevertheless intersect and are complementary through the homage they render to the maritime space. Those events, by causing an undisputable discontinuity in time and space, show how much the favourable reception they obtain is due to their heterotopic nature. They occur in a short span of time, but do leave spatial impressions which marks the collective memory and make up an image of different places. Finally these events are meant to be of an open nature, appealing to non-coastal populations who seize that opportunity to assert their maritime identity. This is a social fact, relevant to contemporary forms of territorially .
