Un atelier local de sculpture architecturale dans la région de Mylopotamos (Crète centrale) : les trois chapiteaux paléochrétiens d'Éleftherna

Από την αρχαία πόλη της Ελεύθερνας, επισκοπική έδρα της Κρήτης κατά την παλαιοχριστιανική περίοδο, προέρχονται τρία κιονόκρανα με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον : δουλεμένα στον ντόπιο ασβεστόλιθο, ανήκουν - τουλάχιστον τα δύο απ' αυτά - στον τύπο των μεικτών κιονόκρανων, καθώς συνδυάζουν δύο διαφορετικούς τύπους δίζωνων κιονόκρανων. Τα κιονόκρανα της Ελεύθερνας ακολουθούν πιστά τα κωνσταντινουπολίτικα πρότυπα, εγγράφονται όμως αναμφίβολα στην παραγωγή ενός τοπικού εργαστηρίου, έργα του οποίου βρίσκουμε σε μνημεία της περιοχής του Μυλοποτάμου. Χρονολογούνται στο πρώτο μισό του 6ου αιώνα.

Three capitals from the ancient city of Eleftherna, the seat of a bishopric in the Early Christian period, are of particular interest. Worked in the local limestone, they belong — at least two of them — to the mixed type combining two different types of two-zone capitals. The Eleftherna capitals faithfully follow Constantinople models, but are without any doubt the products of a local workshop, whose products we find in various monuments in the Mylopotamos region. They date to the first half of the 6th c.

De la ville antique d'Éleftherna, siège episcopal de Crète à l'époque paléochrétienne, proviennent trois chapiteaux qui présentent un intérêt particulier. Travaillés dans le calcaire local ils relèvent — pour deux d'entre eux du moins — du type des « chapiteaux mixtes » puisqu'ils associent deux types différents de chapiteaux à deux zones. Les chapiteaux d'Éleftherna, datés de la première moitié du VIe s., suivent fidèlement les modèles constantinopolitains, mais ils s'inscrivent sans aucun doute dans la production d'un atelier local dont nous trouvons des œuvres dans plusieurs monuments de la région de Mylopotamos.
