The Egyptian Cults at Amphipolis Membra disjecta (3rd c. BC -3rd c. AD) Already noted in the 19th century by certain French voyagers, the presence of the Egyptian cults at Amphipolis has been corroborated by the inception of archaeological exploration on the site. At present, considerable evidence, especially inscriptions (several of them unpublished), documents their development over nearly six centuries, from the 3rd c. BC, when a Macedonian venerates Sarapis and Isis equally with his sovereign, to the 3rd c. AD, at which time they had obviously been joined by an astonishing Egyptian sphinx-god. Scattered discoveries, frequently in secondary use, these “ isiaca” confirm the existence, at the mouth of the Strymon, of one or more sanctuaries dedicated to the Egyptian Gods. These were probably as prestigious as those at Dion, Philippi or Thessaloniki.

Déjà notée au XIXe s. par certains voyageurs français, la présence des cultes isiaques à Amphipolis ne fait que se confirmer depuis l’engagement de l’exploration archéologique du site. Un nombre considérable de témoignages, surtout des inscriptions, dont plusieurs inédites, y attestent aujourd’hui leur développement sur près de six siècles, depuis le III e s. av. J.-C., où un Macédonien vénère même le couple isiaque avec son souverain, jusqu’au III e s. apr. J.-C., époque à laquelle leur était manifestement adjoint un étonnant dieu-sphinx égyptien. Découvertes éparses, ayant souvent servi de remplois, ces isiaca assurent à l’embouchure du Strymon l’existence d’un ou plusieurs sanctuaires isiaques qui n’avaient probablement rien à envier à ceux de Dion, Philippes ou Thessalonique.
