Η διάκριση των ομώνυμων κατασκευαστών των ελληνικών ενσφράγιστων αμφορέων. Στα σφραγίσματα αμφορέων που φέρουν τα ονόματα του κατασκευαστή και του επώνυμου άρχοντα (οι οποίοι κατά συνέπεια δραστηριοποιήθηκαν ταυτόχρονα σε μια δεδομένη χρονιά) παρατηρούνται αρκετά συχνά (έως και στο 15% των περιπτώσεων) ομωνυμίες. Είναι λοιπόν περίεργο ότι οι ειδικοί δε μελέτησαν ποτέ με ποιον τρόπο τα διάφορα κέντρα παραγωγής ξεχώριζαν τους άρχοντες από τους κατασκευαστές στις σφραγίδες, οι οποίες, όποιος και να ήταν ο ακριβής ρόλος τους, πρέπει να συνδέονταν με τον έλεγχο (διοικητικού χαρακτήρα) της παραγωγής αμφορέων. Αυτό επιχειρήσαμε να κάνουμε στο άρθρο αυτό, όπου περιοριζόμαστε στις κατηγορίες που μας είναι πιο οικείες (της Θάσου, της Σινώπης, της Ηράκλειας, της Αίνου, της Ακάνθου, της Μένδης και, σε μικρότερο βαθμό, στις ελληνοϊταλικές). Προτάθηκαν πολλές λύσεις (βέβαιες, πιθανές ή υποθετικές), οι περισσότερες από τις οποίες πρέπει να γίνονταν κατανοητές μόνο από τους άρχοντες που οργάνωναν το σφράγισμα των αμφορέων.

Distinguishing homonymous producers on Greek amphora stamps. Among the producers associated on Greek amphora stamps with an eponymous magistrate (and having thus been in office together during a specific year) there appear rather often (up to 15% of the cases) homonyms. One may thus be surprised that the specialists have never studied the ways that the different production centres distinguished them, in a system of stamping which — whatever its ultimate purpose — must have exercised a certain control (of an administrative character) on the production of amphoras. That is what I have undertaken here, basing myself on a couple of centres most familiar to me : Thasos, Sinope, Herakleia Pontike, Aïnos, Akanthos, Mende, and Ischia. Several solutions (certain, probable or hypothetical) have come to mind, of which the greater part would not have been comprehensible but to the magistrates in charge of stamping.

Parmi les fabricants associés sur les timbres amphoriques grecs à un magistrat éponyme (et ayant donc été ensemble en exercice une année donnée) figurent assez souvent (jusque dans 15 % des cas) des homonymes. On peut donc s’étonner que les spécialistes n’aient jamais étudié les façons qu’avaient les différents centres émetteurs de les distinguer, dans un timbrage qui − quelle que fût sa finalité précise − devait exercer un certain contrôle (de caractère administratif ) sur la production amphorique. C’est ce qui est entrepris dans cet article, où l’on se cantonnera aux séries qui nous sont les plus familières (thasienne, sinopéenne, héracléote, aïnienne, akanthienne, mendéenne et, dans une moindre mesure, gréco-italique). Plusieurs solutions (sûres, vraisemblables ou hypothétiques) sont alors apparues, dont la plupart ne devaient être compréhensibles que par les magistrats organisateurs des timbrages.
