Recovery of effaced mediaeval recipes for painters and illuminators from Brussels Royal Library MS 10152 [circa 1200]

Two articles in the Bulletin reported (1842), and partially edited (1954), technical recipes for painters and illuminators, from c. 1200, which are preserved in Royal Library of Belgium MS 10147-58. The edition of 1954 omitted f. 26 v° as it was almost completely illegible. This paper identifies a series of parallel recipes from Montpellier MS H 277, c. 1350-1400. The similarities allow the content of f. 26 v° to be reconstructed. The Brussels MS is shown to be an important witness to an alternate textual tradition of the Romanesque craft treatise of Theophilus, its importance is confirmed as probably the earliest technical document relating to art from the Low Countries.

Deux articles dans le Bulletin ont présenté (1842), et en partie édité (1954) des recettes techniques pour peintres et enlumineurs, à partir de c. 1200, qui sont conservées à la Bibliothèque royale de Belgique MS 10147-58. L'édition de 1954 a omis f. 26 v° en raison de sa quasi illisibilité. Ce document identifie une série de recettes parallèles de Montpellier MS H 277, c. 1350-1400. Les similarités permettent de reconstituer le contenu de f. 26 v°. Le MS de Bruxelles se révèle un témoin important d'une tradition textuelle alternative du traité de Théophile sur l'art roman, son importance a été confirmée comme étant probablement le premier document technique relatif à l'art des Pays-Bas.

Twee bijdragen in de Handelingen rapporteerden (1842) en zorgden voor de gedeeltelijke editie (1954) van technische recepten voor schilders en verluchters, vanaf ca. 1200, die in de Koninklijke Bibliotheek van België worden bewaard (ms. 10147-58). De editie van 1954 liet het f. 26 v° weg, daar het zo goed als helemaal onleesbaar was. Dit document identificeert een reeks parallelle recepten uit Montpellier (ms. H 277, ca. 1350-1400). Dankzij de overeenkomsten kunnen we de inhoud van f. 26 v° reconstrueren. Het Brusselse handschrift blijkt een belangrijke getuige te zijn van een alternatieve teksttraditie van het traktaat van Theophilus over de Romaanse kunst en zijn belang wordt bevestigd als waarschijnlijk het vroegste technische document over de kunst uit de Lage Landen.
