This contribution aims, with the help of seven accounts from the archives of the counts of Hainaut and Holland between 1304-1337, to shed light on the practices of paid employment at the court and in the count's household. An analysis of the terms used in these documents to designate the services for wages and the people remunerated allows us to sketch a picture of the organisation of the comital household. Contrary to what normative texts, such as court ordinances, show us, these services were not rigidly structured according to a clearly defined schema. Rather they were (dis)organised pragmatically according to the changing daily needs of the count's family, whose members were frequently travelling and often separated from one another, to the financial resources of the moment and to the fortuitous availability of the people involved to perform the various services. Over a period of roughly 25 years these snapshots reveal personnel with widely diverse skills, flexible and employable in multiple tasks, faithful to and valued by their employers but also often very active in other sectors than in the service of the count and his family.

Cette contribution tente d'appréhender, à l'aide de sept documents comptables provenant des archives des comtes de Hainaut et de Hollande entre 1304 et 1337, la pratique du service à gages à la cour et dans l'hôtel comtal. Une analyse des termes utilisés dans ces documents pour désigner ces services et les personnes rémunérées permet de brosser un tableau de l'organisation de la maisnie comtale. Contrairement à ce que des textes normatifs, telles les ordonnances de cour, nous montrent, ces services ne sont pas structurés de façon rigide selon un schéma bien défini. Ils sont plutôt (dés)organisés de façon pragmatique selon les besoins journaliers changeants d'une famille comtale ambulante et souvent séparée, les moyens financiers du moment et la disponibilité des personnes concernées par les différents services. Sur une période d'environ 25 années, ces instantanés nous montrent un personnel de niveaux très divers, multi-disponible et flexible, fidèle et apprécié par ses employeurs mais souvent aussi actif dans d'autres secteurs que le service comtal.

Deze bijdrage beoogt aan de hand van een zevental rekenkundige documenten uit het archief van de graven van Henegouwen en Holland (1304-1337) licht te werpen op de praktijk van de loondienst aan het hof en in het grafelijke hotel. Een analyse van de in deze documenten gebruikte termen om de personen in loondienst en hun taken te benoemen laat toe een beeld te schetsen van de organisatie van de grafelijke huishouding. In tegenstelling tot wat normatieve teksten zoals hofordonnanties ons voorhouden blijken deze diensten in de realiteit veel minder volgens een welomlijnd stramien gestructureerd te zijn. Ze zijn integendeel heel pragmatisch (on)georganiseerd volgens de veranderende dagelijkse behoeftes van de rondreizende en vaak gescheiden grafelijke familie, de financiële mogelijkheden van het moment en de toevallige beschikbaarheid van de betrokken personen voor het vervullen van één of andere taak. Over een periode van ongeveer 25 jaar tonen deze momentopnames een personeel van heel divers allooi dat multi-inzetbaar en flexibel is, trouw en gewaardeerd door hun werkgevers maar vaak ook heel actief in andere sectoren dan de grafelijke dienst.
