Guillaume Des Marez and Hanns Schlitter were historians, university professor and archivists – the former in Brussels, the latter in Vienna. They exchanged a rich correspondence spanning the first decade of the 20th century. The present article offers a critical edition of the 83 documents (in French and in German) of which it is composed. This correspondence not only contains interesting biographical information concerning both scholars ; it also sheds light on their scientific activities and on their professional and private networks. These letters vividly testify of the mutations of archival and historical sciences at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, both on the methodological and international levels. Finally, these documents also contain surprising information relating to Des Marez’s and Schlitter’s opinions concerning the current political and social situation and to their relationship with freemasonry.

Guillaume Des Marez et Hanns Schlitter, tous deux historiens, professeurs dans l’enseignement supérieur et archivistes, l’un à Bruxelles, l’autre à Vienne, ont échangé une importante correspondance au cours de la première décennie du XXe siècle. Les 83 documents qui la composent, en langues française et allemande, font ici l’objet d’une édition critique. La correspondance apporte des éléments biographiques précieux sur les deux érudits et témoigne de la poursuite de leurs travaux ainsi que du réseau de leurs relations professionnelles et privées, mais est également un vivant témoignage de la mutation de l’archivistique et des études historiques au tournant du siècle et de la méthodologie appliquée par les érudits et ce sur un plan international. Enfin, les lettres apportent des éléments surprenants sur l’opinion de Des Marez et de Schlitter vis-à-vis de l’actualité politique et sociale, mais surtout sur leurs relations avec la franc-maçonnerie.

Guillaume Des Marez en Hanns Schlitter waren allebei historicus, hoogleraar in het hoger onderwijs en archivaris – de ene in Brussel, de andere in Wenen. Ze onderhielden een belangrijke briefwisseling tijdens het eerste decennium van de 20ste eeuw. Ze bestaat uit 83 documenten in het Frans en het Duits die hier kritisch worden uitgegeven. Die briefwisseling levert ons niet alleen kostbare biografische informatie over de twee geleerden ; ze werpt ook een interessant licht op hun wetenschappelijke activiteiten en op hun professionele en private netwerken. Zo tonen die brieven de mutaties die de archivistiek en het historisch onderzoek meemaakten tijdens de overgang van de 19de naar de 20ste eeuw, zowel op methodologisch als op internationaal vlak. Tenslotte bevatten die brieven verrassende informatie over de houding van Des Marez en van Schlitter ten aanzien van de politieke en sociale actualiteit, maar vooral ook over hun betrekkingen met de vrijmetselarij.
