Summary. – An aspect of diplomatic culture : letters of credence, procuration letters, letters of instruction and letters of safe-conduct in the early fifteenth century The juridification and the increasing degree of writing in the Burgundian government, combined with a courtly knight culture, defined the Burgundian diplomacy. The ongoing professionalization of the diplomacy in the age of duke John the Fearless (1404-1419) encouraged the specialization and formalization of diplomatic documents. This contribution presents a range of the most commonly used types of diplomatic documents : letters of credence, procuration letters, letters of instruction and letters of safe-conduct.

. – Un aspect de la culture diplomatique : lettres de créance, de procuration, d’instructions et de sauf-conduit au début du quinzième siècle La juridification et le recours croissant à l’écrit dans l’administration bourguignonne, ainsi qu’une culture chevaleresque, marquèrent les contours de la diplomatie bourguignonne. La professionnalisation de l’activité diplomatique à l’époque du duc Jean sans Peur (1404-1419) encouragea la spécialisation et la formalisation des documents diplomatiques. Cette contribution offre un éventail des documents diplomatiques les plus usités : lettres de créance, de procuration, d’instructions et de sauf-conduit.

Samenvatting. – Een facet van de diplomatieke cultuur : geloofs-, volmacht-, instructie-en vrijgeleidebrieven in het begin van de vijftiende eeuw De juridificering en de toenemende verschriftelijking van het Bourgondische bestuur tekenden, samen met een hoofse cultuur, de contouren van de Bourgondische diplomatie. De professionalisering van het diplomatieke bedrijf ten tijde van hertog Jan zonder Vrees (1404-1419) werkte de specialisatie en formalisering van diplomatieke documenten in de hand. Deze bijdrage biedt een waaier van de meest gebruikte types van diplomatieke documenten : de geloofsbrieven, de volmachtbrieven, de (toonbare en niet-toonbare) instructiebrieven en de vrijgeleidebrieven.
