La littérature indonésienne en traduction française

French translations of Indonesian literature published between 1958 and 2019, in France as well as in Indonesia, amount to a total of 54 titles. This article reviews these translations, focusing on some particularly significant titles and commenting on the quality, often deficient, of some of them. Translators have a great importance in the choice of translated titles, but the 54 titles as a whole do not present a representative panorama of Indonesian literature. Also discussed are translations of ancient Malay literature, of other languages of Indonesia, and of Malaysian literature. The number of translations of modern Indonesian literature into French is finally compared with that of the translations of this literature into other foreign languages and the translation of other Asian languages into French.

Les traductions françaises de littérature indonésienne publiées entre 1958 et 2019, en France aussi bien qu’en Indonésie, comptent au total 54 titres. Cet article passe ces traductions en revue, s’attardant sur certains titres particulièrement significatifs et commentant la qualité, souvent déficiente, de certaines d’entre elles. Les traducteurs ont une grande importance dans le choix des titres traduits, mais l’ensemble ne présente pas un panorama représentatif de la littérature indonésienne. Sont également commentées les traductions de littérature malaise ancienne, celles d’autres langues d’Indonésie et celles de littérature malaisienne. Le nombre des traductions de littérature indonésienne moderne en français est enfin comparé à celui des traductions de cette littérature dans d’autres langues étrangères et à celui des traductions d’autres langues asiatiques en français.
