Archaeology and social anthropology have different problematic and theoretical interests. Even ethnographical data cannot generally be compared with archaeological data. It is why anthropologists at present can only badly answer questions from archaeologists. It is argued here that archaeology needs specialised anthropologists, trained in archaeological issues and well aware of them; only such anthropologists will be able to identify, in the field or in old reports, the data useful for archaeological research, i. e. which could throw some light on the interpretation of archaeological data.

L’archéologie et l’anthropologie sociale ont des problématiques et des intérêts théoriques très différents. Même les données recueillies par les anthropologues sur le terrain sont dans leur majorité rarement comparables à celles de l’archéologie. C’est pourquoi l’anthropologie telle qu’elle est ne répond que très mal aux questions posées par les archéologues. Cet article soutient que l’archéologie a besoin d’anthropologues spécialisés, formés à ses problématiques; ils chercheront, en fonction d’elles, à recueillir sur le terrain ou dans les anciens rapports les données ethnographiques utiles à la recherche archéologique, c’est-à-dire susceptibles d’éclairer l’interprétation des données archéologiques.
