The remains of the Frankish church at Sephoria, by Esther Grabiner The remains of the Frankish church at Sephoria are one of the finest witnesses to monumental sanctification in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. The parts that have been preserved, which include the chevet and the lateral walls of the last bay of the nave, are characteristic of the architecture of the first Frankish kingdom. Diverse sources of inspiration are apparent in the ground plan, in the integration of the construction with the rock, the conjoined use of pointed and round arches, the pillars, mouldings, decoration of the capitals and occasional reuse of ancient Roman elements. The importance of Sephoria from both the military and religious points of view is due not only to its geographic location but also to its proximity to the important pilgrimage town of Nazareth. As a stopping point on the road between Acre and Nazareth, Sephoria also acquired the status of a pilgrimage site, legitimating its holiness.
