The history of the château of Châtillon-sur-Indre, by Jean-Pascal Foucher The château of Châtillon-sur-Indre is organised around a motte and dwelling which, according to twelfth-century sources, existed since the ninth. It was fortified during the eleventh century when it passed under Plantagenet control, and then returned to the royal domain in 1205. It was given in 1274 to Pierre de la Broce, chamberlain and favourite of Philippe III, who built an important residence there, before his possessions were confiscated in 1278. The château then became, until the mid fifteenth century, a royal residence, and occasionally a princely one until the early sixteenth century. Regularly used from 1473 onwards as a counting house and administrative seat, the château was finally given over to Denis-Jean Amelot de Chaillou in 1745. In 1797 the château was dismembered and sold in ten lots. Considerable destruction and transformation took place until the 1980s, while the local community slowly acquired nearly the entire site.

Le château de Châtillon-sur-Indre s’est développé autour d’une motte et d’une demeure qui, selon les sources du XIIe siècle, auraient existé dès le IXe siècle.
