Jhs. verschont gebliebene, verschalte, nicht geböschte, quadratische Türme mit einfachen, von einem Sturz bekrönten Bogenscharten, deren Sohlen nicht abgeschrägt sind. Es gibt keine historischen Notizen darüber ; man kennt auch keine vergleichbaren Turmbauten, deren Datierung historisch gesichert wären. Diese untypischen Türme von Châtillon konfrontieren die Forschung mit dem heiklen Problem der Datierung. Sind sie das frühe Ergebnis – vor 1204 -der Befestigungspolitik von Heinrich II., von Platagenêt, die dieser in den ersten Jahren seiner Herrschaft in allen seinen Territorien praktizierte, oder könnten sie auf eine späte Anwendung einer archaischen Form zurückgehen und würden sie in diesem Fall von den damaligen Konzeptionen der Militärarchitektur völlig abweichen ? Typologische Vergleiche mit anderen, im selben historischen Zusammenhang stehenden Bauten lassen eher die erste These plausibel erscheinen.

Defended with arrow-slits with simple splays, covered with lintels and without slope, the towers have no historical mention, nor is there a comparable structure that can be surely dated. The atypical character of the towers at Châtillon-sur-Indre thus poses a thorny problem of dating. Are they the precocious result, before 1204, of Henry II Plantagenet’s policy of fortification throughout his realm during the early years of his reign, or could they be a later use of an archaic formula, which would make them completely out of step with the concepts of military architecture at that time ? The typological comparisons with other buildings in the same historical context suggest that the former analysis is the correct one.

L’enceinte du château de Châtillon-sur-Indre conserve, rescapées des destructions du XIXe siècle, deux tours quadrangulaires, planchéiées et non talutées. Celles-ci, défendues par des archères à ébrasement simple, couvertes de linteaux et dénuées de plongée, ne bénéficient d’aucune mention historique ni de l’existence d’une comparaison datée avec certitude. Le caractère atypique des tours de Châtillon-sur-Indre pose donc le problème épineux de leur datation. Sont-elles le fruit précoce, avant 1204, de la politique de fortification développée par Henri II Plantagenêt sur l’ensemble de ses territoires dès les premières années de son règne ou bien pourraient-elles être issues de l’emploi plus tardif d’une formule archaïque qui, en l’occurrence, les placerait en total décalage avec les concepts de l’architecture militaire de leur temps ? Les rapprochements typologiques, avec d’autres édifices inscrits dans un même contexte historique, incitent à valider la première thèse.
