Figures and rights. Data mining or statistics for checking claimants. Since 2011, the Family branch of the French social security system has been using data mining as a statistical tool to select claimants for checks. This tool serves to strengthen the policy of inspection of which it itself forms a central aspect. The type of probabilistic and predictive thinking which it implements is in line with managerial thinking in terms of " risk management", the use of which has redefined checks on claimants. This article recounts the history of the importation and use of this technique and reveals what is at stake in organisational (centralising the inspection policy and reducing the initiatives of field operatives) and socioeconomic terms (by necessarily targeting inspections on the most vulnerable claimants).

Depuis 2011, la branche Famille de la Sécurité sociale a recours à l’outil statistique du data mining pour la sélection des dossiers d’allocataires à contrôler. Cet outil participe au renforcement de la politique de contrôle dont il constitue, en retour, un élément central. Le mode de raisonnement probabiliste et prédictif qu’il met en oeuvre est en affinité avec la pensée managériale en termes de «maîtrise des risques » , à partir de laquelle le contrôle des allocataires a été re-défini. Cet article restitue l’histoire de l’importation et de l’usage de cette technique, et en révèle les enjeux au plan organisationnel (centralisation de la politique de contrôle et réduction des initiatives des agents de terrain) et au plan socioéconomique, avec la focalisation de fait du contrôle sur les allocataires précaires à laquelle il conduit.
