Bernard Gui, an Atypical Dominican Hagiographer ? As early as the 13th century, the order of the Friar Preachers stood out with the production of abridged legend books such as The Golden Legend or Summary of Saints’ Gestures and Miracles, intended for preachers. Yet, between 1312 and 1318, the master of the Dominican order ordered to Bernard Gui another book of the same kind. Gui asserted the Dominican identity by taking up the common hagiographie basis established by his predecessors. But he also stood out through his choice of a greater exhaustiveness, rejecting excessive abbreviations, as well as through an attachment to a historical vision of the world of the Chosen Ones.

Dès le XIIIe siècle, l’ordre des frères Prêcheurs se distingue par la production de légendiers abrégés, destinés aux prédicateurs, tels que La Légende dorée ou l'Abrégé des gestes et miracles des saints. Pourtant, entre 1312 et 1318, le maître de l’ordre dominicain passe commande auprès de Bernard Gui d’un autre recueil de ce type. Ce dernier affirme l’identité dominicaine en reprenant le fonds hagiographique commun établi par ses prédécesseurs. Mais il se distingue aussi par le choix d’une plus grande exhaustivité, par le rejet d’une abréviation excessive et l’attachement à une vision historique du monde des Elus.
