This article examines the relationship between pope John XXII and the franciscan Bertrand de la Tour. Both men were bom in the Quercy, educated at Paris, and served as administrators in Toulouse, but were only brought together in Avignon by the crisis within the franciscan Order during the late 1310s. Although Bertrand had no apparent influence at beginning of John XXII’ s pontificate, his standing grew through intellectual consultation work : in the condemnation process against Peter of John Olivi’s Apocalypse Commentary, and in the drafting of the decretals Ad conditorem canonum, Cum inter nonnullos, and Antique Concertationi. Such efforts earned Bertrand the dignity of cardinal bishop of Tusculum and made him one of the most powerful friars minor at the papal court.

Cet article examine les relations entre le pape Jean XXII et le cardinal franciscain Bertrand de la Tour. Les deux hommes naquirent dans le Quercy, étudièrent à Paris, eurent des fonctions administratives à Toulouse et ne furent rassemblés en Avignon qu’à la faveur de la crise au sein de Tordre franciscain à la fin de la décennie 1310. Bien que Bertrand n’ait pas eu d’influence apparente au début du pontificat de Jean XXII, son influence grandit grâce à son travail intellectuel pour des consultations concernant la condamnation du Commentaire sur l ’Apocalypse de Pierre de Jean Olivi et pour la rédaction des décrétales Ad conditorem canonum, Cum inter nonnullos, et Antique Concertationi. Ce travail lui valut la dignité de cardinal-évêque de Tusculum et fit de lui l’un des frères mineurs les plus puissants de la Curie.
