Smith, Catalonia, the South of France and the libertas Ecclesiae at the time of Innocent III This paper examines the context of the grant of freedom of ecclesiastical elections by Pedro II of Aragon and confirmed by Pope Innocent III. It argues that affairs in the south of France, particularly the king’s attack on the church of Elne and his marriage to Marie de Montpellier, played a significant part in the king’s decision, which was especially valuable to Innocent III in his long-term battle for libertas Ecclesiae.

Il suggère que les affaires du roi dans le Midi, en particulier son attaque contre l’Église d’Elne et son mariage avec Marie de Montpellier, ont joué un rôle très important dans sa décision qui fut particulièrement utile à Innocent III dans sa lutte à long terme pour la libertas Ecclesiae.
