Die vorhandene kritische Ausgabe des direkten und indirekten Briefwechsels zwischen B. Pascal und P. de Fermat nimmt sich vor, deutlich zu machen, wie diese Autoren die «géométrie du hasard» aus deren Vorgeschichte herausgezogen haben, dank dem unumgänglichen Schaffen neuer Begriffe und neuer Verfahren. Zu diesem Zweck, hat man die gesamten bekannten Texte gesammelt, ihre Lücken und Ellipsen auszufüllen versucht, indem man dem Gedankengang beider Briefpartner nachgegangen ist, ohne die modernen Algorithmen anzuwenden. Somit werden namentlich beide pascalsche Betrachtungsweisen einleuchtend -insbesondere die zweite in ihren Einzelheiten und in ihrer Folgerichtigkeit- und darüber hinaus die Schwierigkeiten, die die Anwendung der kombinatorischen Analyse, die Einführung des Unendlichen und das Nichtvorhandensein des Begriffes Grenze mit sich ziehen.

This critical edition of the direct and indirect correspondence between B . Pascal and P. de Fermat proposes to understand how these writers have dragged out of its prehistoric state the «géométrie du hasard», thanks to the necessary elaboration of new concepts and procedures. In this aim, all the texts that are known have been gathered, an attempt has been made to fill the gaps and the ellipses by restoring the thought-processes of the two correspondents without resorting to modern algorithms. Thus, a new light is thrown in particular on the two approaches used by Pascal (and more precisely on the detailed proceeding and the logic of the second one), as welle as on the difficulties stemming from the use of combinatorial analysis, the introduction of the infinite and the lack of any limit concept.

Cette édition critique de la correspondance directe et indirecte de B. Pascal et P. de Fermat se propose de comprendre comment ces auteurs ont tiré de sa préhistoire la «géométrie du hasard», grâce à l’élaboration obligée de concepts nouveaux et de nouvelles procédures. On a, pour cela, rassemblé l’ensemble des textes connus, essayé de combler leurs lacunes et leurs ellipses en restituant la démarche des deux correspondants sans recourir aux algorithmes modernes. Ainsi s’éclairent notamment les deux approches pascaliennes (et en particulier le détail et la logique de la seconde), ainsi que les difficultés qui résultent du recours à l’analyse combinatoire, de l’introduction de l’infini et de l’absence du concept de limite.

Esta edición crítica de la correspondencia directa y indirecta entre B. Pascal y P. de Fermat se propone entender cómo dichos autores sacaron de su prehistoria a la «géométrie du hasard», gracias a la elaboración obligada de conceptos nuevos y de nuevos procedimientos. Para ello, hemos reunido el conjunto de textos conocidos y tratado de suplir sus lagunas y elipsis, restituyendo la vía tomada por ambos comunicantes sin recurrir a los algoritmos modernos. Así quedan puestos de manifiesto especialmente los dos enfoques pascalianos (más particularmente el segundo en sus pormenores y su lógica), así como las difficultades que resultan del recurso al análisis combinatorio, de la introducción del infinito y de la ausencia del concepto de límite.
