Developing the views set out a long time ago by Jerphagnon in his thesis, the article centres initially upon the phenomenon of the 'anybody' who could be considered as the sign, in Italy, of a political movement. It then attempts a comparison with the Niemand and the Nobody which presented the thematic basis to an important part of Sixteenth-century literature. Going beyond these two forms of approach, the analysis goes on to suggest a paradoxical affinity with the extreme notions of the Rien and the Nemo in negative theology, a vague premonition of which is already to be found in the saying of Ulysses, «My name is nobody».
