This paper is dealing with Alain Chauvet’ s these on “porte nantaise”. Two main ideas are developed : firts, while A. Chauvet has been working on a regional geography basis, the methodology of transport geography is able to give a useful help for analysing the Nantes problem in a complementary way ; second, the main East-West flows which are suggested by the these hereupon indicated are often opposite with other North-South flows which have nothing to do with the “porte nantaise”, in the history and in the presen time. But the usefulness of the notion of “porte” is in these ways clearly shown.

La présente contribution fait référence à la thèse de doctorat d’Alain Chauvet et est une réflexion sur la notion géographique de “porte” dont la fonction est attribuée à Nantes. Il s’agit : de réfléchir sur l’apport que pourrait fournir la géographie de la circulation à ce thème qu’Alain Chauvet a conçu sous l’angle de la géographie régionale prioritairement ; puis de rechercher si cette fonction d’ouverture (“porte”) a toujours existé et si elle n’a pas ses limites aujourd’hui.
