Southern Brittany fishing sector is faced with a painful process of change. After two centuries of upheavals and spatial reorganizations, the region is trying to save a vital activity. The last period of prosperity (1980-1990), based on trawling, was one resulting from a system dominated by fishermen’s organisations. This represented a change from the industrial and commercial forces associated with the canning industry which had dominated from the mid-nineteenth century. Today, a new logic of market forces dominates the fishermen who must conform to its demands.

La pêche de Bretagne-Sud est confrontée à une douloureuse mutation. Après deux siècles de structuration et de bouleversements, elle cherche les moyens de pérenniser une activité essentielle. La dernière période de prospérité (1980-1990), fondée sur le chalutage, a été celle d’un système dominé par les producteurs. Cela rompait avec la dynamique industrialo-commerciale née au milieu du XIX siècle. Aujourd’hui, une nouvelle logique de la filière s’impose, celle du marché dominateur auquel doivent se plier les producteurs.
