Urban Foodstuff Supplying and Development of Truck Farming Crops in the Region of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The peasants of Burkina Faso have always practiced various forms of truck farming that are based on local produce and which are raised in compound gardens. The crops include egg plants, peppers, okra and sor¬ rel. This activity has experienced a marked growth, especially in relation to urban centers like Ouagadougou. In this city, the strong demographic expansion has led to heavier food needs, while the spaces traditionally reserved for agriculture has dwind¬ led. To resolve these problems, the city of Ouagadougou, which no longer has enough space, has turned to the peri-urban areas where peasants are developing new methods of crop raising, which supplies them with supplementary income and aids in improving their standard of living. This activity, however, has encountered various problems such as the silting of dams, difficulties related to the selling of harvests, and the threat of diseases linked to the use of water. The number of farmers and local folk affected, on the other hand, are still of modest proportions.
