- Often controverted, the Meso American image of chacmool has given rise to a lot of discordant studies. Some have proposed general interpretations. Here, on the contrary, the author suggests that the functions of the chacmool, considering it as a ritual object, have permited several reproductions according to the periods, the localisation, the cultural traditions and the analysis is specifically based on its characteristics in the mexica context.

RESUME- Très discutée, l'image mésoaméricaine du chacmool a suscité de nombreuses études inconciliables. Certains ont proposé des interprétations générales. On propose ici, au contraire, que les fonctions du chacmool, en tant qu'objet rituel, ont permis des représentations diverses selon l'époque, la localisation, les traditions culturelles et l'analyse porte spécifiquement sur ses traits dans le contexte mexica.

RESUMEN- La polémica imagen mesoamericana del chacmool ha generado múltiples estudios discrepantes. Algunos han propuesto interpretaciones generales. Aquí se plantea, por el contrario, que las funciones del chacmool como objeto ritual permitieron diferentes representaciones en el tiempo, en el espacio y en tradiciones culturales, por lo que se analizan sus rasgos específicamente en el contexto mexica.
