Character, which is in itself an always elusive and controversial literary category, is first studied from a sémiologie point of view, as form and meaning. By this technique, the author tries to demonstrate that its label is more or less the result of reading activity and text construction. By an examination of this label, the author analyzes the character's function in the story and how through the sequence of prolepsis and analepsis, the already mentioned label determines the different story sequences, and gives the story itself the ideologic role which is characteristic of the novel.
