Disquieting familiarity. The observation of a certain number of relationship situations between the French and immigrants leads to a conclusion which at first sight may seem paradoxical. It is the familiarity of The Other which is disturbing rather than his strangeness. For the French, not only does cohabitation with immigrants create a risk of social non-differentiation but it also brings to life again certain instinctive concepts : those to do with popular culture and in particular with rural culture. In this sense, the proximity of immigrants can be considered as "a test of reality" coming to upset the psychic economy of the French people who are themselves often uprooted and particularly unsettled in their identity. Such observations lead us, on the one hand, dialectically to reapprehend the question of otherness in its function of propping up identity and on the other, to explore what might be defined, in a first approach, as "a symbolic economy" of immigration.

L'observation d'un certain nombre de situations relationnelles entre Français et immigrés conduit à un constat à première vue paradoxal : l'Autre dérangerait moins par son étrangeté que par sa familiarité. Non seulement la cohabitation avec les immigrés apparaît aux yeux des Français comme un risque d'indifférenciation sociale mais la présence des immigrés réactualise un refoulé : celui de la culture populaire et notamment de la culture rurale. En ce sens, le voisinage des immigrés peut être considéré comme une "épreuve de réel" venant bouleverser l'économie psychique de populations françaises elles-mêmes bien souvent déracinées, particulièrement fragilisées dans leur identité. De telles observations conduisent d'une part à ré-appréhender dialectiquement la question de l'altérité dans sa fonction d'étayage de l'identité et, de l'autre, à explorer ce qui pourrait se définir, dans une première approche, comme une "économie symbolique" de l'immigration.
