The west-african women retailers between formal and informal markets. The Togolese women retailers illustrate the way in which many African women have participated in the urban economy of the coastal regions of West-Africa. Less educated than men but faced with the obligation to earn a living they have adapted their know-how in the field of business to the supplying channels of the urban centres. The women cloth retailers in Lomé (Togo) are famous for their mercantile traditions, their professional solidarity and their participation in the political life of Togo. The present article also analyses the durability of the various functions of the market in a native environment.

Les commerçantes ouest-africaines entre marches formels et informels. Les revendeuses togolaises illustrent la manière dont bien des Africaines ont participé à l'économie urbaine des régions côtières de l'Ouest Africain. Moins scolarisées que les hommes mais sommées de gagner leur vie, elles ont adapté un savoir-faire en matière commerciale aux circuits de ravitaillement des centres urbains. Les revendeuses de tissu de Lomé (Togo) sont réputées pour leur tradition mercantile, leur solidarité professionnelle et leur participation à la vie politique du Togo. Le présent article analyse également la pérennité des diverses fonctions du marché en milieu autochtone.
