Music and alcohol in the north-east Amazon basin Fermented beverages and collective intoxication play a privileged role in the ceremonies organized by the South American peoples. In the North East Amazon basin communal music making is unthinkable without alcohol. Dansing without drinking is inconceivable. The examples proposed here show that, through their strong association, music and alcohol contribute to the structuring of the ceremony in a joint programme, and reactivate a ritual definition of the relationships between men and women.

Les boissons fermentées et l'ivresse collective occupent une place de choix dans les cérémonies des peuples d'Amérique du Sud. En Amazonie du Nord-Est, il ne saurait y avoir de musique communautaire sans boisson. Danser sans boire est inconcevable. Les exemples proposés ici montrent qu'à travers cette forte association, musique et alcool contribuent à structurer la cérémonie dans une programmation conjointe, et réactivent une définition rituelle des relations entre les hommes et les femmes.
