Initiation and training at the hospital. How to become a nurse ? This article presents the foundations of the human relations established in the work of the French, hospital nurses, through initiation stages which inscribe the distinctive marks of the nurses’identity not only on their memory but also on their bodies. The first hospital, training periods in which they become hardened to pain, through the sometimes tough disovery of suffering, are followed by informal training sessions, often very long, with older nurses who are firmly rooted in the field, allowing the young nurses to become more in tune with the emotions raised by the environment or the direct, dirtying, dangerous hand-to-hand fight with illness, death, contagion and madness, in the anthropological sense of the terms.

Cet article présente les fondements des relations humaines développés dans le travail d’infirmières hospitalières françaises, au travers des étapes initiatiques qui inscrivent dans la mémoire, mais aussi dans le corps des soignantes, les marques distinctives de leur identité. A l’endurance des premiers stages hospitaliers, liée à la découverte parfois brutale de l’hu manité souffrante, succèdent des apprentissages informels souvent très longs - aux côtés d’anciennes soignantes déjà enracinées sur le terrain - permettant aux jeunes infirmières de déplacer des émotions suscitées par le voisinage et le corps à corps directs, salissants et dangereux avec la maladie, la mort, la contagion et la folie, au sens anthropologique des termes.
