New ricefields : a situation which can only be judged when one considers the need. It is sometimes said that events are not left to chance. Indeed, they seem to follow the laws of Rationality from the moment that one is willing to subject them to careful examination. But to assert this fact is one thing and it is another to reduce the events of history to this assertion. They meet expectations and they also bring novelty and surprise. The notion of necessity will therefore help one understand these events provided one only considers it as an initial determinant and when, at some moment of the analysis, one realizes the sociological and collective dimension of an invention. The creation of about fifty ricefields in a Nepalese village, between 1980 and 1986, will serve as an example.

On dit parfois que les événements ne relèvent pas du hasard. De fait, ils ne semblent pas échapper aux lois de la rationalité dès lors qu’on veut bien les soumettre à un examen attentif. Mais c’est une chose que d’affirmer cela, une autre que de réduire les événements à la matière première de l’histoire. Ils répondent à des attentes, ils sont aussi porteurs de nouveau¬ té et d’imprévu. La notion de nécessité aidera donc à la compréhension des événements, pourvu seulement de la tenir à sa fonction de déterminant initial, et quand, à un certain moment de l’analyse, on aura perçu la dimension sociologique et collective d’une invention. La création d’une cinquantaine de rizières, survenue de 1980 à 1986 dans un village du Népal, nous servira d’exemple.
