"making up people" : state classifications, local categories and the management of identities in the collectivization of the romanian countryside. The analysis of the current transformations taking place in Eastern Europe is due to answer to two research imperatives : a better understanding of the functioning of socialism, and a better comprehension of the place the state occupies in the societies of these countries. While trying to answer this challenge, the article constitutes itself into an archaeological digging into the mechanisms of state building during the socialist period, by way of an analysis of the collectivisation process in Romania. By doing that, it hopes to throw a novel light on a particular, and crucial moment in the process of reciprocal construction of the state and the "people" in this region of the world, and thus on the "starting point" of one of the processes of reconfiguration of their relationship, that is, decollectivisation.

L'analyse des transformations actuelles dans les pays de l'Europe de l'Est est appelée à répondre à deux impératifs de recherche : une meilleure connaissance du fonctionnement du socialisme, et une compréhension de la place de l'État dans les sociétés de ces pays. En donnant cours à cet appel, l'article se constitue dans une fouille archéologique des mécanismes de construction de l'État durant la période socialiste, à travers une analyse du processus de collectivisation des terres en Roumanie. En faisant cela, il espère jeter une lumière nouvelle sur un moment particulier, et crucial, du processus de construction réciproque de l'État et des «gens» dans cette région du monde, et ainsi sur le «point de départ» d'un des processus actuels de réaménagement de leur interrelation, soit la décollectivisation.
