Louis Bachelier, né en 1870 dans une famille de négociants en vins installée au Havre, est considéré comme le fondateur de la finance mathématique et l’auteur d’avancées importantes sur la voie de la théorie de la relativité. Son œuvre fut découverte aux USA juste après sa mort et exerça une influence importante. Le but de cet article est de contextualiser les travaux de ce précurseur et de proposer une lecture socio-économique de la formation de ses idées. En retour, les idées de Louis Bachelier permettent aussi de porter un autre regard sur le fonctionnement et l’évolution de son milieu d’origine : les négociants du Havre à la fin du XIXe siècle.
