К вопросу о срубании дерева у водлозеров (в связи с представлениями русских о смерти). Автор рассматривает предписания и запреты в связи со срубанием дерева (в частности на материале русских народных загадок) ; он проводит параллель между срубленным, сухим деревом и покойником в гробу, в свою очередь изготовленным из дерева. А. упоминает разные домашние инструменты, также называемые «деревом», которым приписывается особая магическая сила, связанная с миром мертвых. А. исследует разные виды намогильных знаков, обнаруженных им на заброшенных кладбищах, и подробно останавливается на использовании дерева в этой функции.

On the ritual of cutting a tree among the Vodlozery (in the relation to russian beliefs about death). Using popular Russian riddles, the author evokes ritual prohibition and formulas related to the cutting trees, making parallels between the diy cut tree and the dead in a coffin (cut out of tree trunk). The author also enumerates traditional house hold appliances which are called «trees» and which are supposed to have magic power in the context of the netherworld. Finally, using the example of old abandoned cemeteries, the author analyzes different types of tomb decorations, and particular, the role of the tree in this function.

En s'appuyant sur les devinettes populaires russes, l'auteur évoque les prescriptions et interdits rituels liés à l'abattage des arbres, multipliant les rapprochements entre l'arbre abattu ou sec d'une part, et le défunt dans son cercueil (lui-même creusé dans un arbre) d'autre part. Il énumère divers instruments domestiques également appelés «arbres», investis de pouvoirs magiques essentiellement en rapport avec le monde des défunts. Enfin, à partir de vieux cimetières abandonnés, il étudie les différents types de décorations placées sur les tombes, et en particulier la place de l'arbre dans cette fonction.
