American Road and Soviet Path : a short-lived convergence. In the space of ten years (1926-1936) were published in the Soviet Union three American travelogues by first rank Soviet writers : Majakovskij's My Discovery of America, Piľnjak's O.K. and II' f and Petrov's Little Golden America. Though all these three books underline the superiority of the Soviet Union, they reflect a change in the Russian perception of the United States. This change is particularly noticeable when you look at the way each author considers American roads. For Majakovskij, America is still the country of railways ; Piľnjak doesn't attach great importance to roads, but they are the only fact that resists his systematic criticism of the American civilisation ; as regards Iľf and Petrov, the American road is the backbone of their book. It is an example of technological efficiency, rational organization and control over territory that Soviet Union should . follow. But this convergence between American road and Soviet path was short-lived : the launching of Stakhanovism brought an end to Soviet Fordism and the tragic history of the Moscow-Minsk highway reflects the divorce between American road an Soviet path. Twenty years before Nabokov's Lolita, Iľf and Petrov's book foreshadows the road novel, but thereafter this genre remained almost unknown in Soviet literature, except for Aksënov's novel In Search of a Genre, where the road is no longer associated with the efficiency of a modern state, but with an eccentric artist's individual search.
