Résumé En

The article deals with the activities of the ordo decurionum in the Campania cities as learned from epigraphic evidence. It is clear however that these activities appear from inscriptions in a misleading and partial way, if we compare them with legal texts and municipal laws. Nevertheless a diligent scrutiny of the vast amount of epigraphic evidence available is surely of great utility, as it has given us further details that would otherwise have been left unknown. In this respect the archives of the Tabulae ceratae Herculanenses are of particular importance.
