Il principe in villa. Residenze imperiali in Italia e servizi di sicurezza

Roman Emperors frequently travelled through Italy and the provinces escorted by friends, members of their management, household staff and soldiers. From historical and epigraphical sources, we are well acquainted with a good number of imperial residences situated in Roman environs and organized to assure the sovereign working and resting in safe and peaceful conditions. In this paper, the author tries to examine the security service for the Emperor visiting his Italian villas, beginning from some places (Centumcellae, Lorium, Alsium, Albanum, Lanuuium, Praeneste, Tibur) where were situated imperial estates frequently attended, on purpose to discover epigraphical traces of urban troops soldiers (praetorians, equites singulares Augusti, classiarii, uigiles) who were in charge to follow and escort the Prince on travel and to take care of the praetoria.

Gli imperatori viaggiavano spesso in Italia e nelle province accompagnati da amici, collaboratori, personale di servizio e soldati. Sappiamo che in particolare nei dintorni di Roma esistevano numerose residenze destinate ad accogliere periodicamente il sovrano, consentendogli di riposare e lavorare nel modo più sicuro e proficuo. Per studiare l’organizzazione del sistema di sicurezza all’imperatore in visita alle sue ville, si parte in questo lavoro da alcuni dei luoghi (Centumcellae, Lorium, Alsium, Albanum, Lanuuium, Praeneste, Tibur) che ospitarono residenze imperiali ben frequentate, per cercare, attraverso le iscrizioni, tracce della presenza dei soldati (pretoriani, equites singulares Augusti, classiarii, uigiles) che viaggiavano al seguito del principe.
