We study here 210 funerary inscriptions concerning soldiers from the legions of Mainz from Augustus to the IIIrd century. For the 1st century the sample can be divided in 3 chronologic al periods. During the 1st century, inscriptions making mention of the soldier’s family are in a minority and concerned mainly brothers, especially in the 1st period that gives the greatest number of brothers. From the IInd century the funerary inscriptions making mention of the soldier’s family are the largest number, they mention usually wife and children. Finally we discuss the term frater in our sample. Despite the possibility that it indicates sometimes a military brotherhood we must emphasize the fact that the largest number of brothers in our evidence are biological ones and that it is a signifi cant feature of the recruitment of the Roman army.

Nous étudions 210 inscriptions funéraires concernant les légionnaires de la garnison de Mayence, de l’époque augustéenne au IIIe siècle. Le Ier siècle peut être divisé en trois périodes chronologiques. Les inscriptions mentionnant la famille sont alors minoritaires et concernent avant tout des frères, surtout dans la première période du siècle qui donne le plus grand nombre de frères. À partir du IIe siècle les inscriptions mentionnant la famille sont majoritaires et mentionnent d’abord les épouses et les enfants. Finalement nous interrogeons la signification du terme frater dans notre corpus. Malgré la possibilité qu’il indique parfois une fraternité militaire, il faut insister sur le fait qu’il concernait avant tout des frères biologiques et qu’il s’agissait d’un trait significatif du recrutement dans l’armée romaine.
