Until now, only one epigraphic document referred to the African proconsulate of Q. Manlius Ancharius Tarquitius Saturninus. Yet revisions of other texts, from Lepcis Magna and Sabratha, enrich this dossier. These inscriptions give information about this governor and his legate L. Volumnius Memor Felix. Furthermore, they help to define the main task which justifies the presence of those Roman dignitaries in the Syrtic region : the municipal promotion of both cities at the very beginning of Vespasian’s censorship.

Alors qu’il n’était connu jusque-là que par un seul document épigraphique de Lepcis Magna, le proconsulat africain de Q. Manlius Ancharius Tarquitius Saturninus est attesté par de nouveaux textes révisés provenant de Lepcis Magna et de Sabratha. Tout en permettant de revisiter la carrière et l’onomastique de ce gouverneur et de son légat L. Volumnius Memor Felix, ces inscriptions invitent à réfléchir sur la principale mission qui aurait justifié le déplacement de ces hauts administrateurs romains dans la région des Syrtes : la promotion municipale des deux cités au tout début de la censure de Vespasien.
