‘All I Am and all I Know is Rooted in your Streets’ : Women in the Barrio Streets as Depicted in Recent Chicana Writing

The barrio was established as a central place of experience, identification and nostalgic evocation by the first generation of Chicano poets. A number of recent Chicana authors also located their personae in this setting. However, due to its male-oriented nature and the forever imminent danger of falling back on stereotypical images or a particular philosophy of social climbing, the majority of these women writers failed to conquer the streets as a room of their own.

La première génération de poètes chicanos définit le barrio comme un lieu central d'expérience, d'identification et d'évocation nostalgique. C'est également dans le barrio que de nombreuses écrivaines chicanas situèrent récemment leurs héroïnes. Pourtant, la masculinité de ce lieu, les images stéréotypées qu'il convoque, la philosophie particulière de l'ascension sociale qui lui est attachée, empêchent la majorité des écrivaines chicanas de s'approprier cet espace.
