Résumé
The main purpose of the French Archaeological Mission at Amathous consisted in exploring the town itself and more specifically its acropolis. Indeed, the first and biggest excavation took place in the sanctuary of Aphrodite, on the top of the hill, and in the palace of the local kings, located about 200 m lower. Other important excavations were also conducted in the outer harbor, in the area of the North wall of the town, in the agora and occasionally in the North necropolis. A survey leaded around the city brought new evidence both on the Neolithic and historic occupations of the nearby territory. This paper shows the significant contribution of the Mission of the French School at Athens (EfA) to the knowledge of the history of Amathous, from its foundation in the 11th century BC until its abandonment at the end of the 7th century AD.
