The monetary System was not a unifled one in the Plantagenet domains. The monopoly over the right of coinage, the unique design and the maintenance of weight and title made the English penny a stable and powerful currency. On the continent various coinages coexisted which differed from each other in their distinct characteristics as well as by virtue of the diverse authorities that issued them : not only Plantagenêt but also other lords. This diversity — a sign of weakness — explains the rapid success of the royal tournois to the north and then to the south of the Loire.
