A study of the different ways of overcoming the problem of writing Latin fiction in England at the end of the twelfth century. Nigel of Canterbury's Speculum Stultorum, the anonymous Zetus and Hero and the stories of Walter Map show that oriental and French literature provided the main source material. However, the discovery of Petronius and Apuleius allied to the literary credo of Petrus Alphonsi gave Latin writers the possibility of creating fiction whose characteristics show a marked difference from the sources.

Un aperçu des différentes façons de surmonter le problème d'écrire la littérature d'imagination en latin en Angleterre à la fin du XIIe s. Le Speculum Slultorum de Nigel de Cantorbery, l'anonyme Zetus et Hero, et les histoires de Gautier Map témoignent essentiellement d'une utilisation de récits orientaux ou de romans français. Cependant la découverte de Pétrone et d'Apulée et la philosophie littéraire de Pierre Alphonse permettent aux auteurs latins de forger une littérature spécifique dont le caractère se distingue de celle écrite en français à la même époque.
