The insertion of a verse, a scene or an episode into an existing story, can be considered as a form of réécriture since the original text is reemployed and modified in the process. The presence of such an insertion can either affect the logic of the story or reinforce the narrative coherence of the original text. The present study is concerned with an example of the latter kind. In some versions of the First Continuation of the Conte du Graal, is an 'interpolated' passage which has the purpose to harmonise the scenes at the Fisher King according to the Conte du Graal with what is said in the short version of the First Continuation. This insertion is an example of intertextual variance where the redactor, concerned with the linking of diverging traditions, has carefully rewritten and combined the two intertexts at his disposal. The present remarks deal with the technique of reformulation used by the redactor, and examine the imperfections inherent to the procedure : not all of the contradictions are eliminated in the process, and the logic of conciliation on which this kind of rewriting is founded shows its short-comings. The examination of a second insertion, present in one of the manuscripts of the Conte du Graal, evidences the same ambiguity of the logic of interpolation.

L'insertion d'un vers, d'une scène, voire d'un épisode, dans un récit préalable, constitue une forme de réécriture puisque le texte initial est repris et transformé. Une telle insertion peut viser au renforcement de la cohérence narrative et diégétique du texte premier, ou bien modifier la logique du récit. C'est à un exemple du premier type que s'intéresse cet article. En effet, dans certaines versions de la Première Continuation du Conte du Graal, figure un passage « interpolé » qui tente de concilier les scènes chez le Roi Pêcheur que l'on trouve dans le Conte du Graal et dans la version courte de la Première Continuation. Cette insertion offre un exemple de variance intertexuelle dans la mesure où son rédacteur, soucieux d'allier des représentations divergentes, a soigneusement réécrit, en les combinant, les deux intertextes dont il disposait. La présente analyse dégage les procédures de reformulation qu'il emploie, et s'interroge aussi sur les imperfections de sa démarche : toutes les contradictions ne sont pas supprimées et la logique de conciliation impliquée par cette réécriture montre ses failles. L'examen d'une autre insertion, présente dans un manuscrit du Conte du Graal, prouve que l'interpolation relève d'une forme de logique ambiguë.
