À partir de deux exemples récents (1998), relatifs aux ensembles culturels Kongo et Batéké, nous proposons de cerner deux ordres de contraintes à l'origine de la structuration du discours anthropologique sur l'art. Le premier est relatif à la difficulté d'identifier les instances compétentes en matière de vérification et de régulation des discours anthropologiques sur l'art. Le second concerne la dépendance des chercheurs vis-à-vis des institutions chargées de gérer le patrimoine artistique. Dans la conversion d'un savoir anthropologique élaboré par des scientifiques en une connaissance commune diffusée auprès du grand public, il n'est pas certain que les critères de convertibilité soient eux-mêmes scientifiques. Ce sont donc des obstacles à la fois d'ordre historique, psychologique (phénomène d'autocensure) et épistémologique qui sont ici envisagés.
