Résumé
Based on a general typology of reference, this article tries to establish a fundamental distinction between the deictic uses of zi and zhi in the Shang inscriptions. Their uses are not in all cases symmetrical: zi is essentially cataphoric and refers to a locative concept, the text itself or a concrete object, while zhi is anaphoric and is used only for locative reference. The fundamental difference however concerns the space and time localisation with respect to the speaker. Zi refers to the time and the space where the speaker views himself as being, while zhi refers to the time and space which the speaker does not relate to himself.
