Unlike many other leaders of the Russian communist party, eliminated during Stalin's rule and fallen into oblivion, there is the figure of one of the Muslim leaders - Mir Said Sultan Galicv - who is well remembered. His spirit has never been granted a respite ever since his death and he is still being denounced as a "deviationist", "nationalist", "anti-communist" agent and even as a spy and a traitor. In an article published in the official Tatar periodical Kazan utlary, the historian Indus Tahirov adopts a different tone and asks: "Who was actually Sultan Galiev?"
