« Gourbi des saute-en-l'air. Good addresses of the French battle front in 14-18. » At war as elsewhere, more than anywhere else, soldiers are in need of a roof a shelter. The problem is that there are none. So, one must take the rough with the smooth, the soldiers have to make their own temporary home. Those minimalist lodgings described in accounts, log-books, letters, drawings and photos of soldiers are giving a quite good summary of what is necessary to stay alive.

À la guerre comme ailleurs, plus qu'ailleurs, les soldats ont besoin d'un toit, d'un logis. Le problème, c'est qu'il n'y en a pas. Alors, à la guerre comme à la guerre, les combattants se font un chez-soi de fortune. Ces habitations minimalistes décrites dans les récits, carnets de route, lettres, dessins et photos des soldats résument bien ce qu'il faut avoir pour vivre.
