The dating of the central part of the southern rampart of Emporion (L'Escala, AU Emporda, Catalogna). The southern rampart of the Greco-Roman city of Emporion (in Catalogna) was discovered in 1908. To this day it never was profoundly studied in an architectural and chronological fashion. The several prospect excavations undertaken while the initial uncovering, or those made by M. Almagro in 1947, never enabled to situate the wall with satisfaction on the time-scale. Dates proposed by different authors vary between the end of the 6th cent, to the course of the 3rd cent. B.C. ! The stratigraphical exploration made in 1985, around the occidental tower, permited the first analysis of the techniques of construction, as well of the material found in the foundation ditches or surrounding grounds. The dates previously announced must be seriously reduced and brought down to past the year of Cato the Elder's landing. The study goes into a process of critical reexamination of the fortifications of the antique city.

Le rempart méridional de la ville gréco-romaine d'Emporion (en Catalogne) a été découvert en 1908. Il n'a cependant jamais fait l'objet d'une étude poussée tant sur le plan architectural que chronologique. Plusieurs sondages réalisés lors de son dégagement initial ou par M. Almagro en 1947 n'avaient pas permis de situer d'une manière satisfaisante cet ouvrage dans le temps. Les datations avancées par différents auteurs varient entre la fin du VIème s. et le courant du IIIème s. av. J.-C. ! Les recherches stratigraphiques faites en 1985 autour de la tour occidentale autorisent une première analyse des techniques de construction ainsi que celle des mobiliers contenus dans les tranchées de fondation ou les terres avoisinantes. Les dates précédemment énoncées doivent être sérieusement rajeunies et ramenées après l'année du débarquement de Caton l'Ancien. Cette étude s'insère dans un processus de réexamen critique des fortifications de l'agglomération antique.
