L'attelage d'Hésiode. Les difficultés d'une reconstitution

Hesiod ("Erga", 469) uses descriptive names to call some elements of the yoke- pole connection, the identification of which has been discussed. Although the figurative and written documents are not very precise, it may be supposed, from Homer, Apollonius, Plutarch and Arrian, that two ways of connecting yoke and pole existed. The "Homeric" one used 3 pieces : "ring", "peg" fixing the ring to the pole, "strap" connection the ring and the yoke. The "gordian" way used only 2 pieces : "strap" rolled round a peg and connecting directly pole and yoke. The hesiodic way may be both, but the "homeric" model seems to be the most likely. Anyways this reconstruction is hard to achieve, because ancient scholars and modern as well are not interested in technique.

Au vers 469 des "Travaux", Hésiode évoque, par des termes descriptifs, des pièces d'attelage dont l'identification a donné lieu à discussion. Malgré l'imprécision de la documentation écrite figurée, on peut supposer, grâce à des textes d'Homère, Apollonios de Rhodes, Plutarque et Arrien, qu'il y eut deux types de fixation joug- timon. L'un (type "homérique") comporte trois pièces : anneau, cheville fixant l'anneau au timon, courroie reliant l'anneau au joug ; l'autre (type "gordien") en compte deux : lien fixant directement timon et joug, cheville autour de laquelle ce lien est serré. L'attelage d'Hésiode peut se rattacher aux deux modèles. On explique pourquoi on préfère, sans trancher, le modèle "homérique", et on attribue les difficultés de reconstitution au peu d'intérêt des anciens (et des modernes) pour la technique.
