This article is an attempt to prove the Hellenistic character of Mithridates Eupator. Against the most widespread opinion, the expansion of the Pontie Kingdom was promoved by the Greek elements of Pontus, who where interested in creating a new commercial framework through the unification of the Euxinus. The wars against Rome were the result of this policy of expansion, and concealed the important actions which Mithridate carried out both in domestic government and foreign relations.

Cet article tente de montrer le caractère hellénistique de Mithridate Eupator. Contre l'opinion la plus répandue, l'expansion du royaume pontique a été encouragée par des éléments grecs du Pont, intéressés à la création d'un nouveau cadre commercial grâce à l'unification du Pont-Euxin. Les guerres contre Rome ont été le résultat de cette politique d'expansion, elles ont masqué les actions importantes que Mithridate a menées, tant en politique intérieure qu'à l'extérieur.
